In 2025, the world watched in awe as elderly women from across the globe laced up their boots, raised their flags, and took to the pitch in one of the most heartwarming and inspiring sporting events of the year—the Grannies International Football Tournament. And among the stars of the tournament was none other than the Kenya Grannies Football Federation (KGFF).

Held in South Africa, the 2025 tournament brought together teams of senior women aged 50 and above from over 10 countries, including France, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Togo, and the United States. These teams weren’t just playing for trophies—they were playing for health, empowerment, joy, and the right to redefine aging through sport.

Kenya’s team, known for their passion, resilience, and colorful traditional attire, brought unmatched energy and spirit to the tournament. From the moment they arrived, they captured hearts with their unity, humor, and powerful story of using football as a tool for healthy aging and community change.

Led by Dr. Elizabeth J. Keitany, the visionary founder of KGFF, the team had spent months preparing for this moment. Training in different counties, holding friendly matches, and undergoing health checks, the Kenyan grannies were more than ready to represent the country on the international stage.

And represent they did! Kenya proudly finished 5th out of 32 teams at the Grannies International Football Tournament 2025, showcasing incredible skill and determination. The team also celebrated major individual achievements, producing the Oldest Player Award and the Top Scorer of the Tournament—a testament to the strength, resilience, and talent of our grannies on the global stage.

While scores mattered, what stood out more was the message behind the movement: aging doesn’t mean slowing down—it means showing up stronger. The Kenya Grannies proved that with the right support, older women can thrive, lead, and inspire generations.

Wrapping Up with Key Insights

The tournament ended with a celebration of culture, sisterhood, and the shared dream of active aging. Kenya may not have taken home the gold medal, but they won something even bigger—the admiration of the world and a growing community of supporters.

As KGFF returns home, the momentum continues. Plans are already underway to expand to more counties, train more women, and prepare for the next international tournament. The grannies have shown that it’s never too late to kick for health, and Kenya is proudly leading that charge.
